Wireless Networking a destop and laptop

Discussion in 'Home Networking' started by Carol Webster, Apr 21, 2004.

  1. Hello
Can anyone give me any advice on what kind of wireless router and other
hardware I should buy to connect a new laptop (not yet bought) to an
existing desktop pc running Windows XP Home edition. The desktop has an
external USB ADSL modem for the internet connection and I need to network
the 2 pcs and share the internet connection.

I've read a .home networking for dummies guide and am thoroughly confused.
    Cheers

If you don't mind the desktop being on, when you want the laptop to have
internet access - you can just buy to buy 2 WiFi cards (or just 1 if the
laptop has built in wireless) and connect them using "Ad Hoc" mode

If you want the laptop to have internet access, even if the desktop is
switched off, then you should buy a Wireless router's with built in ADSL
modems (and 1 WiFI card for the laptop if wireless not built in)

This 2nd solution would also replace your current USB modem which would no
    longer be needed.

Examples of Wireless router's with built in ADSL modems include the

    Belkin 7630
    Netgear 834G
    USR 9106

  3. Thanks Sunil
I really appreciate your advice, I think I'll go with the 2nd option.- a
    router with built-in ADSL modem
    Thanks for the suggestions.
