Wifi antenna and amplifier?

Our business is spread across two buildings. The main building
has WiFi, but the secondary building barely picks up that signal.

I use an iPad in the secondary building, but it picks up a weak signal
from the main building. Are there any external antenna devices that
can pick up and amplify that WiFi signal? I guess an antenna that
works like a repeater would be nice. Are there any such products
on the market? I don't know exactly what to look for.

It's great, but it has a HUGE security breach at first start. So before
you start it, change the password of your network on the router. Start
the repeater, set it up, etc.
Then change back your router password.
Unless you do that, your network password will be seen by everybody who
detects the repeater's SSID.

If I plug in the power cord, will it immediately pick up the signal from
our Building One and make it more usable in Building Two?

Also, we can't install external software, such as drivers, in our work
computers.
Is that going to be a problem? (BTW, the password for the WiFi coming
from Building One is universally known to everyone at work. The only
problem is that Building One enjoys a strong WiFi signal, while Building Two
has a weak signal)

I'd suggest a point-to-point solution using radios from Ubiquity (or
similar) coupled with directional antennas. The p-t-p link could be on
another radio band, such as 5GHz, which may not be as crowded.

In the main building, you'd connect the p-t-p radio into your wired network.
In the second building, you'd connect an access point back to back with the
p-t-p radio.

Perhaps others will chime in with specific equipment and/or configuration
recommendations.

Is this what you are talking about?

 

I don't have specific products in mind, and I think I skipped over the most
important parts. Namely, what kind of distance are you talking about, and
what lies between the two buildings? What are the buildings made of? What's
your budget? ...and other basic questions.

they know the password or not. If it's not an issue, then just plug the
repeater and set it up, otherwise change the main password first,
connect the repeater, then change the password back and change once
again the repeater SSID connection from its built-in settings panel that

Building One and Building Two are separated by approximately 80 yards.
In between the buildings is a parking lot. The buildings are made of brick.
For now, my budget range is $40-$300, but subject to change.

We do get a weak signal in Building Two, which is slightly stronger
depending on where we are standing. Can you recommend anything
in particular will help Building Two pull in a stronger signal? Thanks

 

Maybe I'm going about this wrong..... Instead of trying to bring the WiFi
signal from point A to point B, is there a device that acts as an
independent
mobile hotspot? Something that uses 3G phone signals to create a hotspot?

 

Plenty of them...

A bunch of phones have "tethering" capability. For example, my Nokia
will take a T-Mobile cellular/G/2G/3G/4G/LTE signal and feed
it back out as a WiFi bubble.

There are also purpose-made small boxes that do this as well.

Note, of course, that you will face potential data charges
by the carrier. And if you're at all semi public with
this, those numbers can get high very quickly.
