Warning about BT Voyager 100 ADSL modem

    I recently had a problem with my Voyager USB modem. It would drop the line
    at regular intervals and then refuse to re-connect.

    It happened once before and I cured it by re-installing Windows. My PC was
    running like a dog so it was due a rebuild anyway.

    It happened again recently. I was tempted to do the same again (rebuild my
    PC). But I noticed my HD was thrashing badly and discovered that it had
    reverted to PIO mode - rather than DMA mode. This happens automatically if
    a device causes timing problems to Windows (XP degrades HD performance in
    steps each time a problem arises - I started at DMA Mode 5 and finished up
    with PIO - a really slow mode). This is a known XP issue and will be
    resolved in SP2.

    But the interesting thing is that this was causing my dropped line. The USB
    modem must be very sensitive to HD performance and mines was taking so long
    that the line was dropped.

    I cured my HD problem and my modem problem by removing my IDE channel (via
    Control Panel) and letting XP re-install it at next boot. It immediately
    reverts to its highest supported speed (DMA5 in my case).

    Both my HD and modem are now working perfectly.
