VM trouble?

    What? I have 150 Mb/s VM for £42. This is less than I paid for ADSL when
    it came out over 10 years ago, i.e. £40 + phone rental. My VOIP works
    and cost about £3 a month for all calls, so no need for a phone line.

    Prior to ADSL my phone quarterly phone bill was often in the £100s.

    I'm pretty sure Nynex didn't do cable in my area prior to ADSL.

    Nynex did most of Cheshire including South Manchester. One of their
    satellite and distribution heads was and still is at Wythenshawe along
    with an operational and administrative base now part of VM.

    I was once involved with some advertising for Nynex cable in the
    Manchester area comprising a huge placard with a giant armchair and
    standard lamp in front of it outside Piccadilly station, but anyone in
    that area wanting a phone (at that time) got a Warrington number!

    iirc back in the days of dial-up, Warrington was a favourite spot for
    POPs because it was a local call from both Liverpool and Manchester.

    Doh!

    Law of diminishing returns continues to apply when dicing with minutia.

    The invoices are submitted by VM.
    So VM owns the crappen service they send invoices for.


    And since the first day, almost everything about internet has been
    a futile struggle with crap VM technology and VM's crap rules and
    regulations. Own servers, ssh, VoIP, etc etc etc is a fail if you got VM.

    Go with Bhteee if you are a developer that value a full internet service.

  5. That's right, fond (?) memories of endlessly redialling the Demon
    Warrington POP because it was permanently engaged as soon as cheap rate
    started.

    That was before they went with the virtual POPs - they called them ROMPs
    (regionally organised modem pools).

    to their router. Its impossible to fanthom the idiocy of management trolls
    in internet companies that had such policies.

    Go with Bhtee. Atleast they don't employ dumb management trolls
    to discriminate against developers using the internet
    to its full potential (yet).

    And port 80 - are you sellin anything on that?
    Again management trolls in VM block it in case they can't make any money.
    And Voip is still being degraded on 50mbit link.

    If you are not allowed to fit a switch on the back of their SuperHub
    how come they actually give you the specific instructions of how to
    change the config of your SuperHub to work as a modem rather than as a
    router as supplied? If you use it as a router how can they tell that
    you are using a switch? The only thing that knows there is more than
    one IP address connected to a single port (as it would appear with a
    switch) is the SuperHub itself - and it doesn't pass any related info
    onwards.

    I am a member of the VM system monitoring group and they have supplied
    a second router with special software to sit behind my own router and
    to which all my circuits are connected. They sent me detailed
    instructions with it on how to connect it up whether I was using the
    SuperHub as a router or as a modem with my own router. If I were in
    breach of T's and C's they would have had to send me a NOV so that I
    was legally compliant - but they haven't.

    As I said before I too am on a 50Mb circuit and run two VoIP lines
    with no problem whatsoever. Anyhow, how could they downgrade a
    fractional part of the service to make the VoIP unreliable.

    I think you are seriously mistaken.

    Which clearly and surgically dimishes your rant.

    But even today, its not clear VM is an intelligent service to
    be ordering by anyone.

    You are going to get served with a VM credit check - what for may I ask?
    If you don't pay, you get cut off on the same day the credit runs out.

    Doh!

    Its a double waste of time.

    Just like out dated tactics of bundling phone deals with TV and broadband.

    Who uses a fscking POTs phone? I haven't used one in years!!!
