Hadn't noticed the 40/2. My neighbour ordered the 40/10 while I ordered
the 80/20, he tells me he gets ~75/~15 anyway ...

  2. It may be that the speed caps just haven't been set yet.

A company I visit often recently got 38/20 service. For the first week
or two they were getting 100/20, now it's been correctly set to 38/20.
(Both cabinets are less than 50 yards away).

I wondered about that, thinking it might be capped after ~10 days to let
the DLM settle down first, but doesn't seem to have happened.

I get better than that with ADSL2+

I notice Plusnet's "standard" fibre service is now 40/2 for new
customers, instead of 40/10. The "extra" service is still 80/20.

    Really !?

That's dumb. As I bemoan the lack of upload speed rather than download
on ADSL. I'd *much* rather have 20/20, or even 20/10...

A curious decision. With Windows 10 (and to some extent 8) integration
with onedrive, phones which upload your photos as soon as you get home
to your wifi, NAS storage accessible remotely, and multi party skype
call and like, decent upload is becoming more important than it ever was.

I guess these are minority interests, most customers just send email and
watch TV/you tube. If you have a few million customers, you won't be
likely to trouble yourself over the few thousand who have other needs.
ISPs are evolving into 3 genres: entertainment companies who happen to
provide connectivity but make their money from the package fees, ISPs
that provide commodity basic connectivity in a cost competitive market,
and the niche providers like A&A and Zen who will suit technophiles and
small business who do worry about upload, traffic shaping and so on.

    Totally agree.
Also agree, but I would argue that upload is not a 'technophile'
requirement. Just think of dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive and people
wanting to send multi-megapixel photos via email. Those are all
    'commodity' requirements.

Although, I'm very happy with my plusnet service I'd considering going
elsewhere if I wanted fibre. An increase of ~1Mbps in uploads is not
worth the money. The 'Extra fibre' package is too big a jump.

    Disappointing, plusnet.

So much so, that this would-be customer won't-be.

    Openreach only charge £6/year less for a 40/2 compared to a 40/10.

I could understand if they were introducing an entry level account, but
to degrade the main type of account that fibre customers would choose,
presumably in the hope of upselling them to 80/20 seems mad.

I would assume the "BT centrals" or whatever they're called now mainly
come in as full-duplex 10Gbps circuits to the ISP? I'd have thought the
upstream from the users barely touches the sides by the time it reaches
the ISP, compared to the downstream?

Yup. And if they're losing customers over it, it's a very false economy.

May have to raise it at the plusnet forum...

Anyone have evidence that the basic fibre package used to be 40/10
    rather 40/2?

  12. If you mean the PlusNet user forum, it has been raised there. See

I'm supposed to be on 38/20 but get 30/5
Apparently no point in going higher as my line will not pass the 76 service.
