Shares not accessible

I have several Windows 2000 Servers that periodically drop their shares.
When this happens the server still responds to pings and is responsive. A
reboot brings all of the shares back, but I havn't any idea what causes them
to drop. When I do a Net View \\ServerName it just sits there. When I look
at the open connections and open files in the System Manager there are none.
The server service is not stopped or hung when this problem happens and
neither is the Computer Browser service. I attempted to stop the server
service and received an error stating that it Could Not Stop the Server
Service - Error 1053 - Service did not respon, but I'm assuming that is
because I was connect via CA RCO client.

There are no entries posted in the Eventlog that would indicate the cause of
this problem.

Here is the configuration of the servers:

IBM xSeries 235 running Windows 2000 Server with SP4 and all post hotfixes
(thru MS04-038).
IBM Director Agent
Trend OfficeScan
CA BrightStore backup
CA Unicenter RCO
CA Unicenter USD (software distribution)

These are all Member Servers on an NT4 domain.

What tools can I use to troubleshoot this?

Why some mapped network drives show a red x

SYMPTOMS: You find that the network drive mapping may be disconnected after
15 minutes of inactivity and Windows Explorer may display a red "X" on the
icon of the mapped drive. However, if you double-click it reconnects
quickly.

RESOLUTION: by default, idle connections will be dropped after 15 minutes.
To modify idle time, at a command prompt using net config server
/autodisconnect: minutes. For example, to set the Autodisconnect value to
30 minutes, you would run the following command line: net config server
/autodisconnect:30. If you would like to turn Autodisconnect off, do net
config server /autodisconnect:-1.
