Shared Disk Space full when not full

Discussion in 'Windows Networking' started by Steve Bruce, mct, Aug 25, 2005.

  1. In addition to backing up to tape we back up to a spare disk on a Windows
2000 workstation for easy restore of single files. It is an 80 Gig disk but
the backup utility says the disk is full after about 10 Gig. The same
happens when we run the backup utility on the server or pull the data with
the backup utility on the Windows 2000 Workstation.

We have done this same thing at many sites without this complication.

    Thanks

  2. What file system is on it? FAT32,...NTFS?
If it is FAT32,...are there any files larger than 4gig?

  3. Hello Steve,
there may be different reasons for this, for example:
The network connection may have dropped.
The driver for the disk may have not been able to write to disk due to the
heavy load (I experience this, if I copy large files like CD images on the
local IDE disk of my Windows Server 2003 test machine(also from network
sometimes), causing the server being less and less responsive until the copy
    operation is finished or canceled.
Issues with SMB signing - if this is configured different on client and
server, this may cause a similar affect as the second issue I mentioned.
Virus scanner software on client and server trying to trace through the
    file.

Are there any possible related errors in the event log of the client or
    server?

    Best greetings from Germany
    Olaf

  4. It is an NTFS partition. It is possible to copy folder/files across the
network to the spare drive using all of the disk space, but the backup
utility has the out-of-space problem consistently whether the backup utility
is running on the server > pushing or on the workstation > pulling.

SMB signing in not enabled (Windows 2000 server ). I will the check the
antivirus and maybe see if the same problem occurs when backing up local
    data, rather than network data.

    Thanks
