Recommendation for VPN

I have BT Infinity with DD-WRT (running on an ASUS WL-500 with VPN
enabled (PPTP)) allowing me access to my home network from iPad/iPhone
when I'm away. However I find the performance very slow (and connection
is unreliable). Hence I have the following questions:

    1. How stable is DD-WRT with VPN ? I'm running V24-sp2 ..
    2. I see a number of specialised VPN devices listed on ebay and wondered
if these would be an alternative/faster approach. I am not looking to
replace my existing router so a VPN server would simply sit in the DMZ.
    3. What configuration would allow me access to UK-only material when I
am abroad (I'm thinking BBC iPlayer, for example) ? Would VPN be
suitable for this or do I need a proxy too ?

    Thanks in advance Paul

Your VPN would be sufficient provided you could route all traffic over
the tunnel. (OpenVPN clients usually let you do this, but I'm not sure
    about the smartphone/tablet implementations.)
