Problems with Virgin.net mail via POP3 over Plusnet connection?

    I use Windows Live Mail V2009 to access my email accounts on PlusNet and
    Virgin via my PLusnet connection.

    I've noticed over the past few days that attempts to read my Virgin account
    have timed-out or have taken a very long time to read the list of messages
    and to download them. I've not changed my account configuration since I
    started to experience the problem, apart from recently changing the server
    addresses from mail.virgin.net to pop/smtp.virgin.net and enabling SSL and
    changing the ports in response to current advice on Virgin's POP
    configuration page; previous non-SSL settings have worked for many years and
    I first started experiencing timeouts with those settings.

    Does anyone know whether Virgin are having problems with their POP gateway?

    I can still access my mail via webmail mail.virgin.net.

    I noticed that my Android phone, using the default mail app, also timed out
    when using the Plusnet ISP connection, whereas using my Vodafone mobile
    broadband connection the email was downloaded immediately. This makes me
    wonder whether it's an issue with Plusnet and access to non-Plusnet POP
    servers. I can't think of a way to test Windows Live Mail over the Vodafone
    connection to compare.

    A typical message from WLM with the new SSL settings is:

    Unable to send or receive messages for the Virgin account. Your server has
    unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include
    server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity.

    I suspect your problem is related to the routing between Plusnet and
    Virgin, rather than an issue affecting your POP mailbox.
