I have just installed a Belkin wireless modem/router for an ADSL serivce
using a laptop with Vista via a Lan connection. I then reconnected the laptop
as a wireless connection. When I added my PC as a LAN connection it connected
but it crawls in data transfer and soon stops communication. I use dignose
connection which comes out fine. I have a VIA Rhine II fast ethernet card. I
have tried to find an updated driver but it has been a fruitless endevour. I
cant connect to Windows update for assistance as it times out.

    Please help!

you really should post this in the Vista Network and Sharing
newsgroup, but you have supplied no info on which model Belkin, what
version hardware and what firmware it has or if you tried updating
the firmware. also did you reboot the broadband modem and what
broadband modem is it? some of them are also routers on their own
    which could cause issues.

Sorry But the PC is running on XP and the laptop on Vista. The Belkin Device
is a 802.11b Wireless G Router and ADSL Modem and it is running on the latest
firmware. The PC has been shipped back from overseas and is about 6 months
behind its windows update and does not have SP3. I have tried rebooting,
reinstalling the ethernet connection. The connection runs at about 1kb per
sec. The ethernet adaptor is part of the motherboard (ASUS). I was thinking
of installing a another one in a PCI slot?

what exact model # Belkin router? the phrase "802.11b Wireless G
Router" is a contradiction in terms. what firmware? what model ADSL
    modem?

if it is 6 months behind, I'd connect it via ethernet and get ALL
    the updates.

frankly speaking, I'd check this machine that has been overseas for
    malware and virii as well.

Sorry for the lack of detail. The belkin router/modem is model is F5D7633au4A
with firmware version 6.01.08. It is a combined ADSL modem with a wirelss G
router. The Vista laptop is connected via the wireless connection and the XP
PC is a LAN connection. I too was concened with virus infection so I have
begun updating Norton Antivirus via a dial-up connection. I also noticed that
the Automatic Updates was switched off and I could not restart the service
without downloading a fix. I will then update that via Dial-up and see if
that helps. It is not like there is traffic on the network slowing it down.
It starts up ok but within seconds slows down to 1 kb/sec. I have aslo
noticed after running the network wizard a few times, I get a Default Gateway
connection that is listed in networks but is not enabled. I have tried
enabling it and its connection speed is listed as 1.5Kb/sec???. Other times I
have run the wizard and it does not appear. Also is it possible to delte the
current connection and start again instead of modifying the current one? Will
let you know how the virus scan goes.

    Many thanks

if it were me, I'd seriously consider a clean install after
formatting the drive. Norton in itself can play havoc with network
    connections.

I have 1 Care on the laptop and have paid for it to be also installed on 2
other PC's. Should I uninstall Norton and install 1 Care?.

    HI,

just to let you know the whole problem was solved by installing another
network card independant of the on board one. Everything working fine. It
appears the adapter within the motherboard would not comminucate with the
    DCHP Server for some reason.
