BT Broadband, ZyXEL, newbie, a bottle of wine and a big headache :-(

    Please help me sort this (sob, sniff)

    I have bt adsl and was having problems getting ICS working over my
    home network (although it works fine just as a stand alone) so thought
    I would get a router which support pppoa. Enter ZyXEL prestige 650h-e1
    but I am having real problems troubleshooting it!

    Via the routers web server I get:

    LAN connections
    Test your Ethernet Connection PASS

    WAN connections
    Test ADSL synchronization PASS
    Test ADSL(ATM OAM) loopback test FAIL
    Test PPP/PPPoE server connection FAIL
    Ping default gateway FAIL

    This may as well be a different language to me. Happy to provide any
    settings you need them.

    You need to set the router to use PPPoA (not PPPoE)
    VPI= 0
    VCI= 38

    You also need to enter something as your username and password (though this
    can be anything you like)

    I've got a Prestige 650H-E1 here - indeed, this message comes to you via

    The only thing that doesn't work properly on them is multicast - IGMP is
    documented as broken in the firmware release notes.

    It sounds like you've got the settings wrong. On an IPstream ISP, you
    should get PASS all the way down.

    Go through the wizard (which I can't easily do without trashing my
    non-standard settings).

    Mode should be Routing.

    Encapsulation PPPoA
    Multiplexing VC

    VPI 0
    VCI 38

    ATM QoS should be UBR if you're asked.

    User name and password should be as supplied by your ISP - don't forget
    the @ part. Mine is something like [email protected]

    Thanks for the reply. I had all of the settings above already in :-(.
    I Have tripple checked !!!!

    Could there be a problem with windows (XP pro) or is there another
    setting in the modem which may be messing things up?

    The second screen of the wizard should be:

    User name: ISP user name
    Password: ISP password

    IP address: Obtain an IP address automatically

    Connection: Nailed-Up Connection

    Network Address Translation - you probably want SUA only.

    Presumably you've power cycled the ZyXEL after inserting your settings
    (that is, unplugged it, waited 30 seconds and plugged it back in again).
    If not, try that - you may be surprised!

    What do the logs show - that's under Advanced Setup, Logs, View Logs,
    and the system status - that's under Maintenance, System Status - and
    not only look there, but press the Show Statistics button.

    Things can't be that wrong, as what you posted the last time shows that
    the router has sync.

    It's very unlikely to be anything in Windows - as the router itself
    should work (or not work) on its own. The next question is once you have
    the router connected, do you have Windows configured correctly to use it
    - but it doesn't sound like you've got that far.

    The Prestige has a fairly good telnet interface - if you want to check
    whether the router is working correctly, telnet to the Prestige's IP
    address, select menu 24, then 8. At the command prompt, try

    ip ping

    To get out of that mode, type


    at the prompt, then select menu 99.

    If you really can't get things sorted, you could try

    sys romreset

    at the command prompt - which will reset the router to factory defaults.
    At that point, you could configure it again from scratch through the
    wizard and see if that's any better.

    I couldn't :-(
    So I did. Entered all the details again through the wizzard and it
    worked first time!!!!!
