APs that Support 802.11a and 802.11g

    I know that some access points can support both 802.11a and 802.11g in a
    turbo mode that will allow speeds up to 108 Mbps. I'm looking for an AP
    like that for home use. I would also like one where I can turn the power
    up or down in order to limit the coverage area. Anyone know of a good
    quality, affordable AP for the home that has these features?

    Also, I haven't done a lot of research yet on wireless cards. Again, it
    would need to support both 11a and 11g standards in order to use the
    turbo mode offered by the AP. Any recommendations?

  2. I've used a Linksys WAP55AG. Don't know about the turbo mode idea though.
    Seems to me that, while the AP might be capable of running an A and a G link
    concurrently, the client needs to choose one or the other. One note: I
    can't sem to make the A-side work with my Dell D600 / Truemobile1400 card
    when I turn on WEP. Other than that, it works fine.

  3. It's not turbo but just 11a or 11b. Linksys makes PCI and PCMCIA cards
    that are 11a and 11g (and so also 11b).

    The Linksys AP and cards will support 11a, 11b, and 11g. Since 11b and
    11g are both in the 2.4 GHz bands, the AP and cards will only use one of
    those stardards, depending on your equipment, but they will use 11a
    regardless. This means that the Linksys AP and cards will use 11a
    simultaneously with 11b *or* 11g . One radio operates in the 2.4 GHz
    range, and the other operates in the 5 GHz range. Because the two use
    different frequencies, they don't conflict, so your speed is essentially
    doubled. This is called different things by different vendors, but is
    often referred to as turbo mode or dual band.

    I was lead to believe the Linksys AP does not support Turbo mode.
    FWIW, the last paragraph in this link confirms that:

    Atheros recently made an announcement regarding something called
    Super A/G with their 802.11a/b/g chipset. D-Link is supposed to be
    the first company with a product incorporating the chipset.

    The only 802.11a/b/g AP/router I know that supports 11a 108 Mbps turbo mode
    is the Netgear FWAG114. It also has five levels of transmit power setting
    for each radio (11a and 11b/g). Better yet, it is a VPN firewall. The
    matching PC Card with turbo mode and power level control is the Netgear
    WAG511 (see the good review at
    http://www.timhiggins.com/Reviews-43-ProdID-WAG511.php). The only thing
    won't fit your requirements probably is the $280+ price for the router.

    Like Gray, I can not make my Dell 600m with TrueMobile 1400 card connect to
    the FWAG114 with WEP on in 11a mode neither. I suspect it is a TrueMobile
    1400 compatibility problem. That prompts me to look help from the Internet
    and leads me to your post.

    But this link is for *routers*. This thread is discussing *access
    points*. Check the model numbers on the products. The link I posted is
    to information on the WAP55AG ("AP" for Access Point). The link you
    posted is to information on the WRT55AG ("RT" for Router). Not the same
    product, or even device type. Apples and oranges.

    Thanks for the information! $280 is a little more that I had planned on
    spending, but not out of the range of possibility. Maybe I can find it
    on the Internet somewhere for cheaper.

    One drawback for me personally is that the card is a CardBus, which is
    not a bad thing in itself, but I don't think my laptop will support
    CardBus cards, so I may not be able to use it.
