AOL Wireless Router Recommendation

Discussion in 'Broadband' started by Robin Grayson, Oct 6, 2004.

  1. Hi All,

I have a friend who has AOL Broadband, and wants to connect more than
    one PC to it wirelessly.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

    Thanks,
    Robin

Yes it does. More information can be found here:

You can actually ditch the AOL software for good too.

I only asked, because I believe that there are some providers that
specifically dis-allow the connecting of more than one machine to the
modem (how they can tell, I don't know.....)

  5. Thanks, but that page says they only "support" certain speedtouch
    models.

Will any old wireless enabled ADSL router work with AOL broadband?
Had this not been with AOL I wouldn't even have asked.. I'm just
worried they might have some proprietary way of
    connecting/authenticating.

I know nothing about AOL, but the DrayTek Vigor2600G ADSL Router
specifically states "Now works with AOL" - see
    <http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2600g.html>.
In addition, the router FAQ at
    <http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/router_faq.html>
    has this entry:
    5. How can I use the router with AOL software?
    and the answer starts with:
"Yes, as of January 2004, AOL Broadband (ADSL) users can use any of the
Vigor ADSL routers. Setup is identical to any other ISP...".
I infer from this that it was really an improvement in AOL software that
    allowed the change!

I suppose that the definitive answer will only be gained from AOL
    support.

I've one successful setup done it myself for a friend before using Netgear
ADSL Modem/Router with no problem until now (at least no phone call from
my friend until now that it :). There is no proprietary about AOL ADSL,
the only thing that I remember doing were creating another screen name for
the router so that my friend won't need to use AOL software at all and the
MTU setup at the router to 1400. If you have an old ADSL router around,
    give it a try..

Thanks for that, I'll have a look into the Dreytek router, they seem
to be well regarded at the minute.

    Many Thanks
