Hi
I bought one of these on ebay, for use with my Win 98 SE (quite old)
laptop.

I just can't get it to work on the laptop, although I know it works OK
because I tried it in a friend's XP laptop.

Win 98 sees the new hardware when you insert the card, and asks for
the driver. I then browse to the CD that comes with the card, but the
driver folders are only: Win XP, Win2k and WinMe. So I chose the Win
ME folder.

However, the card never fires up. Looking in control panel I always
see that it is saying the the card (based upon RealTek 8180) is not
functioning. Looking at the properties I see that the driver could not
load (code 2).

I've also gone to Realtek website and downloaded driver for Win98 SE
and tried to install that, still no good.

The user manual definitely mentions Win 98 SE, so I'm sure it should
work.

I tried in another Win 98 laptop, same problem.

Maybe I should upgrade my laptop to Win 2k? Don't realy want to if I
can avoid it, lots of software to reinstall etc etc

Anyone got this card working with Win 98SE?

Andy

I don't know much about this windoz stuff, but try going to the
manufacturer's website and see about downloading a current driver for
win9x.......

The website only has a download button, and no info on what versions of
drivers are available. Perhaps the download itself will contain
multiple drivers and a readme file?

http://www.zonetusa.com/download/zew1000.zip

Good Luck!

Thanks for that - but when I downloaded the software, it seems to be
for a completely different product. Anyway, I tried to install it,
thinking that maybe the product has several names, but after
installation it still did not work.

After reading your response, my curiosity was piqued. I went back to
the website, and after seeing some mention made of Linux, I decided to
download the zip file.

As I suspected, the zip file was a compiliation of 115 files, which
totalled over seven MB of expanded files. THESE ARE INDEED THE FILES
YOU NEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

************************************************** **************************************

This is a text file listing from the readme which is included in the zip
file. What fooled you is that the mention is made of Intersil, and
Prism!!!! Intersil is the chipset manufacturer, and Prism is the brand
name of the chipset!!

Boy, did someone on eBay attempt to f*ck you!! The disk which they
supplied obviously is NOT the correct one for this product, because this
product does NOT use the Realtek 8180 chipset!!!
Download the software, setup the program and point the Windoz9x "found
new hardware, install drivers" routine to the files I've pointed out in
the diagram above, listed under Win9x-2K

Included is a setup program, along with the documentation, drivers,
client manager, etc.

These are files you need, but I can't and won't force you to acknowlege
that fact. Still, they're there on the website for whenever you come
around.

I'm sure glad I investigated further, because I'm always on the prowl
for more cards usable under Linux, and now I've found a VERY INEXPENSIVE
card which comes ready-made with DRIVERS.......:>)

If you have further doubts about the veracity of what I've posted here,
then merely open up the win9x initialization file (netcw10.inf), and
read the products which the file is *operative* upon or for.......It
covers three brands of products!

Here are just *some* of the products for which it is applicable:
PCMCIA\INTERSIL-HFA384X/IEEE-CA62
PCMCIA\INTERSIL-HFA384x/IEEE-CC3C

Valentin

This gets more and more weird. I tried starting from scratch again,
even though I tried installing the Prism drivers before.

The PC definitely recognises the card as "RTL 8180 (Mini-)PCI " card
when it is plugged in for the first time.
I can only assume that the label on the card (front and back) is wrong
then, if it says Zonet ZEW1000.

So I decided to try once again installing the driver I got from
Realtek site. BUT Windows asks me for the file NET8180.CAT and will
not allow me to point to either of the 2 files that I downloaded from
Realtek: NET8180.INF and RTL8180.SYS. So I can't use the driver I just
downloaded!

It seems that NET8180.CAT is the only thing Windows will use, nothing
else.

What a mess.
Any more ideas?

This issue has prompted me to do some further research. The Zonet
website lists the card as a ZEW1000W card. However, the file which
results from the driver link for that card details drivers for a
Prism-based WiFi card. Here's what I've found from this page:

http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters.html.gz

Down at the bottom for the Zonet card listings, there are two (2)
distinct listings; one for a model ZEW1000P and another for the
ZEW1000W card.

The P version was Prism-based, and presumably the W version is
Realtek-chipset based. The Zonet site doesn't differentiate between the
two. However, the drivers they offer are obviously for the P version.
The website lists the W version as, what we could guess or infer, the
*current* version of the card.

I went to the Realtek website, and downloaded the Utility program, the
Setup program, and the drivers listed as being for windows98. I didn't
find anything useful in the Utility download. In the Windows98
download, I just found what you got. However, in the
rtlsetup-8180(330).zip download, I got this file listing -- see
screenshot of expanded file listing --

http://www.thuntek.net/~vguillen/art/realtek1.png

In a subdirectory called \set8180_330163312\win2000 there is a file
called NET8180.cat There's one also in the subdirectory for WINMME
drivers, as well as the subdirectory for XP drivers. .CAT files are
catalog files used in later versions of windows. There is also the
NET8180.cat file in the root directory of the download.

Those CAT files are NOT supposed to be necessary for win98!!

Try obtaining the rtlsetup file from the realtek website and expanding
or unzipping the file onto your hard drive, and then either run the
rtlsetup program, or point the win98 driver installation routine at the
location of the expanded/unzipped files.

Another thing you might try is downloading the win98 drivers for the

D-Link devices listed here: They ALSO use the same chipset!
D-Link DWL510
D-Link DWL520
D-Link DWL650v3
D-Link DWL610
D-Link

Let me know how it goes!
