ZEN ... alternative to Claranet ?

I have a mate who wants to upgrade to 1Mb ADSL from his current 512k
package with Claranet.

Claranet want to charge him a £58 quid "activation" fee for the upgrade,
plus they are about a £5 more expensive per month than other providers
for a 1Mb package.

So, said mate is looking at ZEN ...

Despite my pleas to the contrary, he is a bandwidth whore, and downloads
a lot of DIVx movies etc etc - ho hum

Without going into the morals of all that, would ZEN be a good choice?
Unlimited bandwidth etc, they seem to get good reports on ADSLguide. How
does migration work, i believe ZEN do free migration?

TIA

I can't remember who specifically - you might be able to find out
looking through the Google Groups archive - but one of the people who
Plusnet wrote to complaining about over-use decided to speak to Zen.

He explained the whole situation about why Plusnet were threatening him
with cancellation because he was an extremely heavy user and he said Zen
were perfectly happy about it and weren't planning on introducing any
bandwidth limits etc. So I imagine your friend will be fine.

I would say so, they don't filter/block anything AFAIK, they operate a
usually quite decent inhouse usenet box (it is having some problems at
the moment but they have said they will be fixed soon).

Without wanting to light any touchpapers, I don't think any ISP offers
truly unlimited bandwidth, the T&Cs always cater for that, but I think
Zen are one of the better ISPs in that regard.

So far as migration, I migrated to them a couple of months ago from
Nildram, migration was free, there was one bit of hassle in that Zen
don't set you up on their radius box until BT tell them they've moved
you onto them, and that happened out of Zen hours so I had a night
without ADSL, but I lived :-)

cheers,
Paul

Zen are very good

www.dslzoneuk.net and www.adslguide.org.uk for reviews and ratings, and
as said elsewhere Zen have a decent enough Usenet box if he's a demon
Usenetter

£58 is taking the piss. A regrade shouldn't cost more than thirteen
quid. Moving to Zen and then regrading should sting him about £26 as he
has to migrate like-for-like and then upgrade, and well worth the money
for a better service

Never had any respect for Rawlinson or his Claranet Clowns, so I guess I
should be content that my chumly is moving to pastures new ...

get him to do it now. Zen are offering inward migrations for free at the
moment.

http://www.zenadsl.com/ADSL.aspx?page=188

Then all he'd need to do is pay the single £13 or so charge to upgrade
once he's at Zen

Heh, Demon are sillier - we have our work connection through them and to
upgrade to 1 or 2mb from our current 512 they reckon it needs to effectively
be a new install so we would have 2 weeks downtime. Not really acceptable
when we receive dozens of support and sales emails from customers each day.
I've asked 3 or 4 different people at Demon why they can't just "crank it
up" but they all say no. Also, we would get a new IP, so all our customers
we have remote access to would need to reconfigure their firewalls etc....
Ridiculous!
James.
