Zaurus

Does anyone haev a Zaurus 550 and would like to comment on it. I'm
thinking of buying one with the 802.11b card.

I just ordered a 5500 and a CF 802.11b card. I picked the one
from socket communications -- it draws a lot less current that
the others I looked at. Hopefully it doesn't adversely affect
range too much. It should be here in a few days.

I have a Zaurus SL-5500 been using it for a few months with a wireless
card. I have the D-Link DCF-660W 802.11b card. It works perfectly with
128bit wep and latest Zaurus ROM gives no problem. The once concern I do
have is that when I use the card it consumes the battery really quickly.

I'm a bit biased since I work for Sharp but I bought my whole group
their own. We use them all the time. The most amazing thing was seeing
our web page hosted on one of them. One of my guys put apache on theirs
and downloaded our external web page onto it. Even across the wireless,
it was faster than our regular page!

The battery life is my only concern. If the battery goes completely
flat, you better hope you have your data backed up.

That's one of the reasons I'm considering using one of the ROMs
that only uses RAM for RAM and not for filesystem. I was a bit
dissapointed that the 5600 only had half as much RAM as the
5500. Seems like a step backwards. :/

The site www.sharp.com is running Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000.

I'd love to get a Zaurus, played around with one, it's the only really
interesting PDA, the others are more toys. AFAIK you can run Linux
on others, but with buying one you pay M$, just to remove their "OS".

Why do you prefer the Zaurus to the IPaq?
And what about the Sony Clie?

I'm interested, as I am thinking of getting one or the other.

Do you mean that you won't buy any computer that has Windows installed?
That seems to me an absurdly extreme position,
and means your views on the merits of different computers
are more or less worthless.

Nope, why should I pay for something I won't use. I buy my home desktops
since ages as spare parts and build them myself. The only way to avoid the
M$ tax.

LOL...There are a bunch of other OS & architectures, I'm using.
The world isn't only M$, nor have their "OS" any meaning if we
talk about mission critical systems.
