Your thoughts on antivirus products please....

For some time now I have been using Norton Antivirus on my server (XP), but
I think its time for a change and would value comments reagrding alternative
AV products.

Am I best sticking with a 'paid for' product, or are the free ones just as
good (or better)?

There seems to be plenty to choose from and I think that Norton is a bit of
a resource eater, so your comments to help me choose a replacement would be
welcome.

I need to make sure that whatever I choose, it will monitor in realtime, and
check incoming/outgoing email messages.

Thanks for reading.... your recommendations please.....??

Seconded. It is excellent. Small effect on the machine and top rate performance.

I run it on my school network (32 machines) and I'm totally impressed.

On top of this it is the best performing package especially with regard to viruses
that have just appeared.

Virus bulletin rates it every month as the best performing software.

(Norton btw is a resource hog and has limited performance).

Thirded. Have replaced several NAV installations with this and will
continue to do so.

Light on resources and makes a PC that had NAV on it noticeably faster.

They also have a telephone number one can ring to /speak/ to someone for
technical support. I haven't rang it yet though, so wouldn't be able to
comment on the quality, but the fact they don't make telephone numbers
practically impossible to find is a professional plus.

With every new customer that's come to me with a PC that's behaving "oddly"
and had a new virus on it, or one I've received by email, NAV has failed to
pick them up 100% of the time (out of around 20 instances) and according to
Virus Total[1] NOD32 *detected* them 100% of the time.

I've also heard Kaspersky is pretty good as well.

You can get a free 30 day trial from them.

I have recently downloaded and install NOD32, but it appears to be giving me
big problems. I have installed it on my XP server machine which runs
Apache, PHP and MySQL. It now seems that when anyone tries to access a
webpage on my server, the images are either missing or part missing (half
loaded). I have also noticed that the NOD32 interface (control panel)
doesn't look right.... The close and minimise buttons (top right) are
missing and there are other odd looking things about the panel. Anyone have
any ideas why this would happen? I have the system backed up so I can
return to the previous working settings, but I had rather hoped that NOD32
would do the trick.

Im not running the latest service pack in XP, would that have anything to do
with it?

Comments very welcome.... I`ll continue to run it for a while, but its
causing problems with my web serving

Cheers
John

Just an update... I have decided to give Kaspersky a run instead. Thus
far, it appears to be running great and not slowing the system down like
norton was doing.

Any thoughts on my problem with NOD32 would be very appreciated as its still
an option, if I can get it working properly.

A nice free one that seems pretty good as regards keeping up with new
threats is 'Avast!' by Alwit software. I use it and although I don't have
it on 'constant watch' as I prefer to just ask it to scan new files when
necessary it was nicely unintrusive when I did so for testing purposes.

It's the one I recomend to new users as it doesn't seem as 'clunky' as AVG
and the only review I've seen comparing the two picked Avast as the
fastest to respond to new viruses via autoupdate.

www.avast.com is the URL if you'd like a look.

The only requirement for free use is that it's non business related. They
ask for an email address to receive the activation key and this is the
only email they send you. (No problems from spam, I had my key sent to an
otherwise unused email address)

Two friends of mine have tried it, one was quite satisfied and she
reckoned it good enough but on the other he couldn't get around some
problem, something to do with databasing software.

Could you provide a screenshot of the NOD32 UI you're getting? It is a
little unusual compared to others, including the top-right three controls
on the window, as one uses the "Hide" option to close the window. Have you
tried switching on/off the modules to see if you can see exactly which
could be causing the problem? Have you tried to exclude the folder Apache's
using as it's web directory?

You could also try a web search to see if NOD32 is known to cause problems
with Apache, can't say I know of any cases of this though.
