My exchange is to be enabled in January. Now with my luck I will fail. :-)

Seriously though, what is the pass rate, I only live 1.7km from the exchange
according to the line test that I done with the engineer's test number.

Also, I fancy going with Pipex or Nildram as they are quite cheap and they
consistantly get good results on www.adslguide.org.

However I phoned pipex today and found their phone menu service quite poor,
there was a menu for business or residential, so I pressed residential and
was told to check the website. End of phone call. As I say quite poor.

Anyway, what I want from my ISP is a good binary newsgroup service. I hardly
download large files from the web so this is a must. Good retention and
downloads obviously. My dad has BY 1MB and he consistantly (when it works)
gets 120k per second. He got 60 when he was on the 600k service to I would
be looking for 50-60 most of the time.

Hope someone can help me

Thanks
John

That suggests that your chances are good. If the BT availability checker says
that your line will probably support ADSL up to 2MB/s, then that's another
strong indication that you should get a good 512kB/s connection. You won't know
for certain till you try it properly of course, but I would start saving up for
a good modem/router now.

Rod.

Would recommend getting a Router too, rather than a modem........especially
now with all of the port attacks etc - the built in firewall is well worth
having.

Would say that you will almost certainly be ok if the checker says you
should be able to have a 2mb service etc.

www.giganews.com are about the best News service around.

How long before the activation date do they do the test?

I placed an order with pipex today, and took their offer of the cheap modem
and some filters. This will get me started and I will get a router later. I
have a daughter who is 9 and she wants a connection as well. But my wife is
very against the idea. so I will have to talk her around. How much is a
decent router anyway, I have seen them on www.ebuyer.com for around £70 but
that was a modem/router, I would just need a router.

Also how secure are routers, I can handle someone hacking into my computer
but not my daughters.

Cheers
John

I'd say your chances are excellent. Good luck!

We to be fair, they are doing the Solo product at rock-bottom pricing,
so they probably can't afford to have loads of people manning phones for
these customers.

Last time I checked, Clara had a good news service, but I know it was
having some problems earlier this year so you might want to check with
someone who's using it now.

I'm on BY myself, and they currently have one of the best news servers
of any ISP.

I don`t know about "decent" (perhaps someone will be able to report on
how good the current "ebuyer" cheapo specials are - halli ?) but they
start at £32.98 + VAT (quick find code is 48449)

How would you connect to the net without a seperate modem ?

Have you already bought a modem then? If so, does it have a USB connection or
ethernet? This affects your choice of router, because there are different ones
for different external modems. The best ones also include firewalls, which
would prevent some unauthorised access to your whole network, though you can
also install software firewalls on individual machines as well.

Rod.
