yet anothe samba question

I am running DSL- Damn Small Linux. Based on Debian. Unable to
Browse windows XP shares. Connection times out!.

this is the error when attempting to browse windows share.

Lappy 166mhz 40 megs ram
PCMCIA ETHO Nic card and USB wifi ETH1
network is up and working on devices.

If I disable ETH1 ( wifi ) restart the notebook, it obtains an ip
address. Once i am in the desktop, i click on the samba icon, and I
am able to browse the available groups/folder.
If I disable the ETH0 nic card, and enable the Wifi ETH1, restart the
pc, I am able to ping the window$ box, ping the gateway, browse the
net, however I am not able to browse or see any available group!

if i go into the console and issue:

smbclient -L //Test

it says

added interface ip=192.168.0.3 ( my laptop ip ) bcast=192.168.0.255
nmask=255.255.255.0

and thats it.. after a whil it says this error:

session request to test failed ( Call timed out: sever did not respond
after 2000 milliseconds )

while the laptop is attempting to connect to the xp box, i do a
netstat on the XP machine and see the following

tcp cid-desktop: net bios-ssn 192.168.0.3:1028

so its contacting the xp machine, but thats it.

however, by disabling the wireless, rebooting the laptop, and enabling
the other nic card ETH0, i am able to browse the group no problem.

has anyone see this thing before?i hope i am not the only one.

any help, tips, anything is highly appreciated.. i lost a bit of hair
last night trying to figure it out. I even started clean from Scrath ,
re installed dsl etc.. and the same issue persists.

so to summarize.

Wired eth0 works , i can browse the shares no problem!. if i have the
two cards on the laptop at the same time, i can still browse, as long
as the physical wired card is enable and connected to the linksys
router, all is good.

if i disable the Eth0 and just run on wireless, i can browse the net,
ping anything i want , including the xp box, ping hateway everything..
except i cannot browse the sahres.. it times out!

theres no firewall enabled on the laptop , and i even turned off the
firewall on the router. didnt work

has anyone seen this before? any, any inputs is appreciated.

btw, i am using WAP encryption, and I ahve verified i am connected to
my own network and not the neighbours LOL!.

thanks

You're doing a lot of rebooting. Not strictly necessary if you know what
you're doing enabling/disabling interfaces.

Notice: some comments inline.

Two simple things to check:

1. Is XP firewall blocking shares to other subnets? I have only casual
acquaintance with XP, but SP2 seems to do more firewalling.

2. XP box does not have defined route to wifi network (192.168.0.3). If
the XP box is using the same router which is hosting the wireless network
as its default gateway, then it should /* just work */. Definitely, it's
a puzzle.

Draw a picture including subnets and validate all of the route
possibilities. Check that ping works in each direction before adding
other connections types (shares). Also, some people use bridged
mode on wireless routers to simplify local networking.

thank you very much for the reply.

Both pcs can ping each other.
firewall is disable on all devices including the router
while attempting to connect to xp shares, I quickly run out to the
desktop and type netstat

I can see my laptop ip address connecting to the smb ports on the xp.
it looks like the laptop is connecting to the xp box, but the data is
not being received.

i cant understand this being a routing issue as ping works both ways.
xp to linux box.. . linux to pc.

please note, everything works if the setup goes through the wire NiC.
if i just use the wireless and disable the wired eth0.. then it goes
down hill from there.

i also have a xp laptop. wireless. connecting via the same router. it
works just fine.

Please do not top post.

Can you ping from the XP box to the DamnSL box when the cable is
disconnected? Really, you should draw a diagram, as I suggested in my
last post, and label what is working as you debug paths. Your setup is
just complicated enough that you are confusing what is working with what
is not.

Check your adapter configuration and routing table for each scenario, i.e.
route -n
ifconfig

Then disable your wired ethernet and compare the results
route -n
ifconfig

I am only minimally aware of DamnSL, that is, it is a super minimal linux
distribution. Can you boot Knoppix, or another linux distribution to
eliminate that being the cause.

Try to provide as much information as possible, as precisely as possible,
instead of just saying something is working and something is broken.
