Yahoo Msngr profiles and NTL

Hi Folks

It's really weird but using NTL 1mb all of a sudden I cannot view any
profile. Even my own, on profiles.yahoo.com/dlevinehpcuk I get an
Error 404: File not Found. Yet if I read my hotmail and click on
exactly the same URL within an email I do see the profile.

I have the same problem within messenger if I right click on a
friend's name and View profile I have the same problem.

Any idea?

works fine with my BT BB 1MB Service!

Try rebooting your cable modem and see what happens.

Yes. You are using NTL, so like me, are a victim of their
horrendously useless Poxy Servers and DNS servers which only work
occasionally. Error 404 is the page I see more often than any other.
Sometimes, clicking 'refresh' 4 or 5 times helps. Failing that, it's
a matter of going away and trying again another day.

Cant you use an alternative DNS server and no proxy server?

The NTL Proxy Servers are transparent Inktomis, i.e. all requests are
routed through them even when no proxy server is specified. Some
people operate from a huge list of NTL Proxy Servers and change the
proxy over and over again until they find one which works. The
drawback is that that proxy may well not be working properly the
following day or whenever, necessitating starting the process all over
again.

On occasion, other ISP's proxy servers have worked, but most seem to
have got wise to this trick and restrict access to their own IP
blocks. Only right, of course, because why should they provide web
access to NTL customers?

Similar considerations often apply to other people's DNS servers.

My main gripe with NTL is that they claim to be a 'full access'
provider but use inadequate equipment and have very poor customer
service.. At least BT Broadband etc. make no bones about being an
access-only service.

NTL can be OK through the night - midnight onwards - and during the
day (except during school holidays), but when the ankle-biters get
home things start to slow down around 3.30pm and virtually stop
completely around 7.30pm, recovering again when they've gone to bed.
Indicating, of course, over high contention ratios and server
overload. I was astounded when they started providing the
infrastructure service for virgin.net, tesco.net and AOL, in spite of
being unable to provide a consistent service for their own customers.

Got it to work! Basically it was NTL's daft as a sausage proxies so I
looked up another NTL one and used that instead...now it works!

I have the same problem, how did you manage to "Look up another NTL one"?

i was passed on this information and i'm gonna pass it onto you as i
know its worked for every one thats tried it so far(on NTL)!
if you cant see pics etc and e bay is very slow try this:


Open internet explorer

Go to tools / internet options again(YOU WILL SEE TAB AT TOP OF THIS
PAGE)

Click the connections tab

Then LAN settings

In the lower half it says proxy server

Check the box and enter the following CODE FROM THE LIST BELOW (COPY
AND PASTE IT) use the code for the area nearest to you
Apply and close down explorer

Then try and see if you get anywhere

please note this list is getting old and all of these proxies may not
be there ( but it is worth trying)

Worth checking this group from time to time. You get all the regular
NTL moans but the odd good tip for overcoming their shortcomings!

It was supposed to only be carried on NTL's own news servers but I've
noticed it (and ntl's other groups) are being carried on Eurofeeds as
well. If you do risk using NTL news servers, the most reliable one
(that's not saying much) is text.news.ntlworld.com
