\\xxx not accessible

I have an XP PC and a 98 PC going through a hub to an ADSL connection (which
is connected to the hub). Both computers obtain an IP address
(198.162.1.xxx) and can both connect to the Internet.

The XP shows the name of the 98 PC in workgroup computers, but when I click
on the 98 PC (xxx) I get the following message.

\\xxx is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact .... The network path was not found.

The XP machine does not show up in the network neighbourhood on the 98 PC
but the 98 PC (xxx) name does show up in network neighbourhood.

No firewalls, no Internet Connection Sharing turned on.

Don't know what else to try.

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...c_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

Have tried all these steps diligently, having read previous posts... Still
no luck. Both PCs show up in the DHCP table of the Hub

The IP addresses should be 192.168.x.x. I assume that 198.162.1.xxx
was just a typo.

Do you have a hub or a broadband router? I've never seen a hub that
has a DHCP table. What's it's make and model number? From the IP
addresses, I'd guess that it's a Linksys router.

Can the computers ping each other by IP address? Can they ping each
other by computer name? If not, what happens when you try it?

Thanks for getting back to me. I have an ADSL modem connected to a Linksys
router (BEFW11S4). Bothe PCs connect wirelessly to the router. Both can
access the Internet. The DHCP table on the router shows:

DHCP Server IP Address:
192.168.1.1

Client Hostname
IP Address
MAC Address
Interface

denis
192.168.1.100
00-30-BD-99-FD-B4
Wireless

Martin
192.168.1.102
00-04-76-A6-54-6A
Wireless

Seems to now connect (don't know why - did not change anything). Can see
each computer both ways (sometimes).

Seems it takes about 20-30 minutes to connect

A small file to copy takes forever between the PCs. Says preparing to copy
for about 10 minutes before copying starts.

I can use Netmeeting OK between the two PCs

Try the "Online tweak tester" here, and see if it suggests any changes
to the network settings:
