Hi,

Just got an Xterasys pcmcia wireless card. It is one floor down and
two rooms over from the access point. I'm no more than 75 feet away
from the wap. Should work, right? And it does. Well, sort of. If I put
my hand over card it disconnects. Actually, it doesn't really stay
connected if I hold the laptop on my lap. Only if I set it down on the
table an arm's length away from me and type with one hand only.

Is this

a. typical behaviour of a wireless card
b. a brand to stay away from (you get what you pay for)
c. a defective unit

Thank you for your opinion.

This is a good signal for the range indoors - dont be misled by manufacures
claims - you can get better range if you are outside or if there are no
walls etc to absobe the signal. If you want to you can increase the range by
using a reflector to narrow the signal - this reduces the signal in other
places by improving it in one direction. www.freeantenna.com has some
details for easy to make designs to try for yourself

Thank you for your response. I would like to add two things to the previous
post.

The effect that I describe, happens at shorter distances as well (two rooms
over on the same floor). At the same, a thinkpad with a built-in wireless
card works *everywhere* in the house including the basement. Would this make
you change your answer? Also, can I interpret your original answer as saying
that all brands are the same?

Many thanks,

Bura
