I've been trying to connect XP to Windows Server 2003 for a couple of
days with no success.

Pinging from XP is successful while from the server side times out.

Attempting to join the AD domain from an "Administrator" account on XP
responds with "A domain controller for the domain XXX could not be
contacted."

Any suggestions about how to get this to work?

Thanks in advance.

Begin with turning off the "Firewall" that is packeged with XP. You will
have to explain what you have already tried to do to make it work already,
or we are just in a big "guessing game".

The Windows Firewall can stay on - it helps to increase security. This
is especially necessary if you have laptops. You usually don't have any
issues with the windows firewall running on a domain client.

I'd guess that you'll need to check the dns-settings of the client.
Does it point to the dns-server which holds the AD-Informaitions of the
Domain? And is the DC running correctly? Check with the support tool
"dcdiag /v" if the Dc is OK.

Disable built in ICF firewall and make sure that the XP Pro computer is
pointing to an Active Directory domain controller running dns that contains
the AD zone only as it's preferred dns server as shown with ipconfig
/all. --- Steve

It is best to turn it off until everything works,..then turn it back
on,...instead of having it create unknown obsticals to troubleshooting.

Finally!!!

Thanks to all for the MOST helpful suggestions. Immediately after
posting the Cry For Help I thought of disabling the ICF XP firewall.
That enabled bi-directional pinging.

Then adding the server DNS to the XP box pulled a logon screen for the
server but the network did not appear.

Finally, I added the XP IP as a trusted site to the server and as they
say the rest is history.

I couldn't have done it with all of your help.

THANKS...
