I was wondering why xp and millenium dont get along as far
as remote access? I have win mill and my girlfriend has
xp, she has alot of trouble with her puter with kids
around and i wanted to remote access her puter instead of
running over there all the time, but millenium isnt
compatible with xp for remote setup. Why is that?
I tried to upgrade win mill with xp, the error is
that you cant upgrade to xp from millenium. WHY IS THAT?

Because you didn't use an 'upgrade' version of XP for the installation.

Upgrades aren't recommended anyway... clean installs are the best way to go.

Did you realize that in order to use remote access you need a remote access
client on the WindowsMe computer? It doesn't ship with one installed.

This is a microsoft-spawned and induced dilemma that
promotes their monopolistic business model. Hence, it
is an unfair but an extremely lucrative business practice;
hence their excessive and long running antitrust battles
with the Federal Government. Welcome to the Empire of Bill
Gates!

I upgraded from ME to XP on an HP Pavilion and the result
was a much more reliable system with no crashes like I got
before. I still have two systems running ME that don't
have enough resources for XP, but I highly recommend the
upgrade CD. I don't recommend a fresh install of XP to
replace ME because of the time involved to reinstall the
apps, and since the upgrade process goes so smoothly. (You
also get to keep all the ME desktop themes that are not on
my other "factory installed XP" system)

This is exactly what I thought. But I'll be darned if I can find that
"Remote Access Client" anywhere on the MS web site. Can you or anyone steer
me to it ? Or what folder on the XP CD would I find it on ?

Thanks.

Personally, I like this one:

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...s/msrdpcli.exe

However it is unsupported - Microsoft won't help you if it won't work. (But
I've never seen it 'not work'. <G>)

This is the supported version:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Wow ! I'm so thankful for these links that I'm reticent about asking
anything more !
But I will...

What is the difference between the two downloads ?

Why do you prefer the first ? Some better functionality ?

Finally, when I install this control on WinME, where will the user find the
link "Ask for Remote Assistance" like seen in MSN Messenger on XP ?

Thank you. A LOT.

The first download is an executable file that connects to Remote Desktop,
the second is an ActiveX control that runs in a browser window and connects
to Remote Desktop. I prefer the first one because it's a little neater
(cleaner on the screen) since it runs in its own window rather than a
browser window. You also don't have the overhead of the menus and scroll
bars in Explorer cutting down on the amount of desktop you can see when
connected when you use the first one.

The "Whistler" program will install in the Communications menu if you use
it. I think the second one does too, but I've only used it once so my
memory may be a bit spotty.

Finally, this utility won't let you ASK for Remote Assistance, it will let
you RESPOND to a request. You can't install this on WinMe and then invite
someone else to look at your desktop. You can use it from WinMe to respond
to a request to help someone with Windows XP, or you can use it to connect
to a Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 desktop.

Ok, I got it... Darn, that's not quite the solution I'm looking for.

I am running XP. My client is running ME. They want my client (ME) to be
able to ask me for Remote Assistance (XP).

On my XP to another client's XP, we usually just go to MSN Messenger 6.x and
they then "Ask for Remote Assistance".

What is the code/module I am looking for to load on to my ME client's
computer to allow them to ask for assistance by me on my XP ?

And of course, where is the link to get that piece of magic code or module ?

Thanks.

-Ric
