Please help!!! I have about 10 computer stations running
XP pro hooked to the server running Windows Server 2000.
I have them in workgroup, not domain. I can't seem to
get them to communicate properly with the server. I add
a new user at the XP workstation and give them a
password. I then map the network drive to the folder I
want them to be able to access at the server. I then add
their password to the user group on the server. When the
user logs on I still have to enter my admin. password at
their workstation to get them access to the folder, and
then they have too much access to the server. What am I
doing wrong???!!!

Eric

You'll want to create an account (in Users and Passwords) on the Win2k
machine(s) with the username and password that you use to logon to the WinXP
machine(s) with (and vice-versa). Then you'll need to share out the
resource(s) with permissions for those users. Also make sure they're all
part of the same workgroup. Then you'll no longer be prompted for the IPC$
password (Inter-process communication)

In a peer level workgroup, when you try to access resources on a Windows
2000/XP machine, Windows 2000/XP needs to authenticate the user. If the user
account doesn't exist in it's local account database, then access will be
denied.

In addition to Dave's sage reply - why not just set up a domain? With ten
workstations, a workgroup is a PITA. A domain model gives you centralized
control over security, accounts, etc....
