i have redhat9 server and xp (home edition) on seperate computers.
both are equipped with configured and working network cards and
everyone pings itself. However, when they ping each other, i get a
message "host unreachable"; the only file i configured on linux "hosts
file" i added the network address and the name of the host of xp. i
did not configure any file in xp. i like inform you both computers are
connected by sohoware Hub. do you think hub should be detected on
linux? what file should i configure to let network cards first speak
to each other? by the way i do have dhcp, every network card has its ip
address but no default gatway.
thanks

What's the ip of the hub (router?)? If so, try to ping it.

Don't know anything about your hub, but the easiest way to check your
network config is to use a crossover cable between two computers. Give
the boxes a static ip. Do your XP - ipconfig and your Linux
/sbin/ifconfig if see if it was picked up. Then ping each other using
the ip # from each box.

Maybe someone can tune in with more info.
