XP Pro - how to setup networking

I'm trying to access my server (running SME Linux). I'm using solely TCP/IP
protocols.

I used to be able to access everything on that server from my Windows 98
workstation. I'm having a devil of a job getting it to appear as a networked
drive under XP Pro. How do I do it? The only way I can access my data is via
Internet Explorer and FTP, which just doesn't cut the mustard that well.
Simple explanation required - how do I set up?

XP won't allow logins to a samba-run domain, unfortunately, without some
registry changes. WHat you need to change is the "requiresignorseal" registry
hack, which can usually be found within the samba docs.

This page may also help:

http://www.ccs.uky.edu/docs/samba.htm

Also, upgrading to Samba 3.x supposedly fixes some of these problems.

Interesting, am on Samba 2.2.5 on an e-smith SME server, and XP mapping
works fine, with no tweaks. Mind you this is with Pro, not Home as
identified in that article.

Can you XP machine see the server via browsing. What do you see if you
type net view in a DOS box?

You're one of the lucky few then. I had no end of problems. In fact, the XP
(well, NT/2k/XP) incompatibility is well documented in the samba docs.

Ok. I pinged zeus (192.168.40.10) and came up with nothing under the name
but with a response under the number.

I set the Local Area connection up as
IP 192.168.40.12
aubnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.40.10
DNS Server 192.168.40.10
Wins server 192.168.40.10

Zeus (192.168.40.10) is setup to recognise 192.168.40.11 through
192.168.40.14

Zeus works. No problem with Zeus - my NT box and my 98 box both work well
with it.

The only way I can access files is via Internet Explorer FTP which means I
can read but not write

Well, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but whatever it is, it works.
Networking, I love it;-)

Seems to me that you haven't got the correct workgroup setup. The name
does not w*rk because the NS at 192.168.40.10 doesn't know where Zeus
is. Er, I think!

These settings look fine, but is 40.10 the DNS server you should use.
What exactly is Zeus running?

Sorry, I don't understand this. Do you mean Zeus has rules to allow
these addresses?

OK, so it's just the connectivity between NT and 98?

Do you have anything shared on the 98 box? Does it run a firewall?

I can still only use Internet Explorer to ftp my server. I cannot do
anything else with it.
I can access via putty and ping but that's about all - except from httping
the server manager page.

Well, I added
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\netlogon\parameters]
"RequireSignOrSeal"=dword:00000000
to the registry but I still cannot map the network drive. It still tells me
it's not there. I tried pinging zeus and it worked. These are the new ping
and ipconfig logs

Zeus is set up to permit only access from
192.168.40.11
192.168.40.12
192.168.40.13
192.168.40.14

Yes. Zeus will only map a network drive to 98 and to NT. XP rejects it as
unknown.

> Do you have anything shared on the 98 box? Does it run a firewall?

All the systems run Outpost. Outpost is setup identically on all system,
allowing access from 192.168.40.xx

Just one more thing...

Have you got samba installed and running? And you have a user in smbpasswd
with the same username and password as the user on the XP box?
