I have had similar issues in the past week or so but only with one 2003
server which happens to be at a remote site connected by VPN. Note that
until middle of last week all users had no problem. Right now all users can
ping the server but sustained connections (e.g. file copying, remote
desktop) always fail for only about half my users. The rest of the users did
not experience any problem. I started to suspect that a recent Windows
Update caused the problem. Yesterday we noticed that one XP machine seemed
to be "magically" fixed and the only thing that changed was the installation
of a Cisco VPN client. I started installing this VPN client on other PCs and
sure enough it fixed each PC that had previously been unable to connect to
this one 2003 server. I know this "workaround" sounds crazy and I find this
to be extremely bizarre but I still suspect a recent MS Windows Update from
middle of last week is the cause of the initial problem and hope that enough
people are having problems that Microsoft release a patch for it. I don't
want to have to install this Cisco VPN client on every PC in my
organization.
