XP Pro Machine Can't Join NT 4 Domain

I'm working with an older network that has some Win95
client machines connected to a NT 4.0 Server using
a coaxial Ethernet segment. There is also a new XP
Pro SP1 machine connected directly to DSL modem. I wanted
to let all of the machines share the DSL Internet
connection and join the XP Pro machine to the NT 4.0 domain.

I got a Netgear EN104 hub that has a coaxial BNC uplink
port on the back to get the coaxial segment working with
the newer UTP cabling. I plugged the hub into a new D-Link
broadband router, and plugged the XP Pro machine directly
into the router. All of the computers share the Internet
connection and they can all ping each other's IP address,
but the XP Pro machine can't join the NT 4 domain. I
get a "no domain controller available" error message. If
I click on the More button, it says something about a problem
with SRV records.

I noticed that I'm unable to ping the name of the NT 4
server from the XP Pro machine, even though I can ping
the IP address.

Any ideas?

you need to install WINS on the server. this may help. quoted from
http://www.howtonetworking.com/mixednet.htm.
NetBIOS and WINS are required in a mixed network
NetBIOS and WINS name resolution is required only on mixed-mode (Windows 95,
98, Me, NT, 2000 and XP) networks to provide backward-compatibility older
versions of Windows. If you have a domain mixed-mode network with DHCP and
DNS, you are better to cerate WINS in your system. In workgroup mixed-mode
network, most people enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP to resolve NetBIOS name to
equivalent to IP addresses. Alternatively, you can install NetBEUI protocol
in the clients.
