I justed installed a WIFI router to my desktop running XP PRO, and going to
buy my wife a Laptop possibly with XP Home. Will I havve any problems
networking the 2 computers with the different operating systems?

SH!t I have a VPN link to work from my desktop and that makes things more
confusing!

Set up your home network first. Then contact the IT Dept. at work for
help with your VPN.
