I have a windows ME box and an XP bow running together on a network. I have
my DSL connection on the XP computer, sharing the connection, basically
using the XP as a residential gateway. I am well protected with anti-virus
and Keiro 4.1 firewall. If works fine for my purposes. It just has one
annoying problem. On the ME machine there is an icon in the system tray for
the residential gateway device. Every 10 minutes or so a bubble appears over
it that says "new devices available on the network click the residential
gateway icon on the
desktop to view them". It doesn't go away until I click on it. How do I make
it stop appearing???

The residential gateway icon represents the shared Internet connection
on the XP box. I don't know why, but the mechanism that Windows ME
uses to detect it sometimes acts up like you describe.

To stop it from appearing, go to Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs |
Windows Setup | Communications and un-install "Universal Plug and
Play".

Nope, all it's for is UPnP network devices. Unless your router, gateway or
refrigerator can use UPnP you'll never miss it.
