After Logging out of the machine running XP Professional,
I can't Login in. It says the domain or passwork cannot
be identified. If I unplug the RJ45 wire from the machine
and wait 10 seconds and replug it it then lets me on.
Tried new wires and new network device also tried new
user and machine names on server and xp pro. Need
possible fixes

Thanks

Hi Jim,

How is DNS set under TCP/IP on this client? Make sure it points to Active
Directory DNS (and not e.g. your ISP DNS).

Do you have any errors under System or Application Event logs?

You disconnect and reconnect may be allowing you to login with cached
credentials. It sounds like your PC may have lost its account in the
domain.

Also, is your dns setting on the PC pointing at your domain controller ?

Unjoin and Rejoin the domain in Computer Properties > Network ID. You do
that by momentarily joining a workgroup, and then rejoining your domain.

You do not have to obey the reboot request after joining the workgroup, but
do have to reboot after rejoing the domain.

If you decide to remove computer from domain and plan to reboot in between,
make sure (!) you know local administrator password or you will not be able
to logon to your computer.

YES, definitely. I ran into this same problem a few days ago after I logged
in a laptop with a new installation of XP, then tried to switch back to the
old 2000 installation. The domain computer acct stopped working 'cause it
had been "updated" by the XP machine. The local user accounts were so old,
none of the user accounts/passwords matched what I had on file. I
evenutally had to find and use a linux password crack to find an account
with administrative priveleges and remove the password on it. Soaked up an
hour of my time.

Btw, thanks for the tip on skipping a reboot when unjoining/rejoining
domain. I've wasted a lot of time on that.
