Can you connect without NIS installed? If not then re-check the Windows firewall
isn't enabled.

If you still can't connect then it's not a firewall issue, so Windows is preventing
the connect. Has (on the machine than refuses the connect) the files sharing been set
to "private" (this is from memory but the setting is something like "don't allow
others to access my files" or words to that effect). I've not got a copy of XP home
running here, but IIRC the wording is something like that.

Just a thought, have you actually *shared* the drive/folders on the target machine?
That is as well as enabling simple file sharing, does the drive/folder you want to
access have the "hand" icon under it?

You've probably done this, but it just occurred to me that you might have forgotten.

xp home access denied :

Should have known to check this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa
Value name: RestrictAnonymous
Value type: DWORD

it was set to 1 , set it to 0 and all is well..........

Hope that helps anyone else who has the same problem, I suspect it was
caused by some spyware or virus....

Yes, it will have been. If you search google groups I posted about this
problem and the solution some time ago ( http://tinyurl.com/8qhvw ),
sorry I didn't see this thread until you found the solution!

or a standard security setting to deny anonymous passwords.

XP networking is built to work with either identical usernames &
passwords on each machine, or Guest access enabled. This seems too
difficult for most people to take on board.

I did try a lot of googling before i came across the solution. I hope the
use of keywords in my follow up post will allow other people to find it in
future....

On a system that had never been networked, had simple file sharing enabled
(only option on Home), that had gone through the home networking wizard,
would not ordinarily have this registry entry...
