I have my desktop and laptop connected with a wireless router and I have not
configured the security settings because when my grandchildren visit. with
their laptops, they can just pick up my internet connection without having
to change settings. XP disables the network on the laptop saying that it is
not secure and when I tell XP to ignore the fact that the network is not
secure it changes it for the that session but if I turn the laptop off when
I put it back on it has disabled it again.
Does anyone know how I can force XP-Home to keep the settings I put in.

Yeah,

Go to the Device Manager and configure the card there and don't use the
card's utility to configure it. You may have to reinstall the driver for
the card by going to its Website and downloading it and installing it
with Device Manger as well.

In the NIC's Properties, choose the option to display the network
connection Icon in the jobtray. Then you can use the mouse pointer on the
icon to get the signal strength.

Also, you may want to disable the Wireless Zero Configuration service
that can also lead to the card's configuration not holding.

Don't use the card's utility to do the configuration or display the
signal strength.

The connection became as solid as a rock by doing the above.
