I'd post this question in a Windows XP newsgroup, since the network
configuration and troubleshooting steps are quite different than those in
Windows 98.

Morning.
Using a Belkin 5 Port Switch:
Two XP Home Edition machines. We connected the switch to a cable modem in
number 5 port, "A" computer in #4 port and the "B" computer in #1 port, then
installed the software in both computers. We enabled printer and file
sharing and C: drive sharing on both machines. The "A" computer would
access the internet and "see" the "B" machine, but would not access the C:
drive on "B". The "B" machine would NOT access the internet but would
access the C: drive on the "A" computer.
We connected each machine directly to the cable modem and they both accessed
the internet with no problem. After establishing internet connection on
each individual machine, we connected individually through the switch and
still had internet access. But when we connected both machines through the
switch at the same time, we were back to square one. "A" would access the
internet, "B" wouldn't. "B" would access "A", but "A" wouldn't access "B"
even though it could "see" it.
Bottom line is: we have one machine that'll access the web but not the other
machine, and we have one computer that will access the other computer, but
not the internet. Right now we have about 35 man/hours stuck in a 30 minute
job and it's still not working.
If you can assist me, PLEASE contact me.
Thanx
