XP firewall question

I have 3 computers; one with XP Pro, one with XP home, and one with
Windows 2000. Now if I set the firewall in the XP machines so that they
can use the modem to dial out without being accessible from the internet
then I am unable to access the other computers. I suppose I could just
use once computer for accessing the internet, but I use each computer at
different times and they are not all turned on at all times. Is there
anyway, short of turning on and off the firewalls all the time in order
to access both the internet and access the network from each computer.

The firewall in Service Pack two is much improved and lets you fully
customise it for situations such as yours.
The beta release is available now.

Ok Thanks, I'll look into it. I managed to solve my problem a different
way though. I use TCP/IP for the Internet and then I use NWLink
NETBIOS and NWLink IPX/SPX/NETBIOS compatible transport protocol to
access my LAN.

If you were on broadband you could just buy a 4 port router.

Yes, I probably could. Unfortunately, DSL is not available where I
live. I suppose I could go to cable modem, but it is a little more than
I want to spend on an Internet connection right now.

You can do that even with dial-up.
My SMC barricade router has a serial port for modem backup to my cable
connection , so there is no reason why you couldn't get something similar
even if you don't plan to get broadband yet

The XP firewall is a joke if you want to tweak the configuration - try
something like Kerio Personal Firewall instead.
Here's a link to the old version that had fewer features but was free
http://download.kerio.cz/dwn/kpf/ker...1.5-en-win.exe
and here's the new one that has more features for a month then reverts
to a limited free version
http://eu.download.kerio.com/dwn/kpf....16-en-win.exe
