XP data transfer problem

I don't know if anyone in this newsgroup has encountered a similar
problem, but I am trying to fix up a friend's computer, and there's a
strange snag with data transfer from the internet.

The history is that he he has WinXP SP2 as an OS and did have the dreaded
Norton subscription-based virus checker and firewall.

I have removed both, and installed ATGuard for the free firewall (used it
on probably a hundred machines and so far it has never failed me) and
Avast for the virus checker. I have temporarily disabled Avast for testing
purposes. The windows firewall and AV warnings are both switched off.

The difficulty comes when trying to download files from the internet, it
will browse perfectly well in either IE or Opera but the minute I try to
receive a file via http (haven't tried FTP yet) transfer freezes.

Under IE it never does anything, but under Opera the impression is given
that it downloads the first few megabytes and then freezes.
Under Opera I can resume the file, whereupon it apparently comletes, but
the result is corrupt.

I have left his machine 'upgrading' to the original XPII system from his
original CD, and have just discovered that it's supposedly a BETA version.

Could this be the source of the woes? If all else fails I can try
installing my version of XP (SP0) and then upgrading via MSUpdate, to see
if he should go and buy a new copy. The likeliest source I can see however
is the Norton junk not uninstalling correctly, so advice there would be
useful.

Any help extremely welcome. Thanks if so.

Hmm. Sounds like the problems you sometimes get when not ussing Passive
or PASV mode for file transfers.

Maybe, but it's http rather than FTP. I think it's either down to Norton
being Norton, or something to do with supposed user protection under SP2.

I'll gain more information tonight, but it's rare for a windows problem to
have me tugging at what's left of my hair.

Get a proper version of Windows, paid for, and you will notice a difference
to the pirated/beta copies which are rubbish.

Tried an 'upgrade' to my original (yes - paid for) copy of XP rather than
his Beta and the troubles persist.

I've done lots of online searching and found nothing, but last night I
discovered under regedit the remnants of a 180 search abomination, so I
now wonder if that's part of the cause.

I'm going to have to run the full circle and do a total reinstall (doze,
all his drivers plus all his software) unless someone here can offer any
enlightenment. I probably should try asking in uk.comp.homebuilt before I
give up, but I hate appearing in a group just to ask a question.

I'll probably use his Beta again, as I don't think he can afford a new
copy, and it worked fine until he installed/uninstalled Norton. I'll sell
him on Opera, or Firefox if he's that much of a skinflint, which should
mitigate against future malware.

I wish I could figure it out, but according to any tools I import
everything is peachy, it's just that you can't download files.

It's fascinating in a perverse sort of way, as (even though I say so
myself) it's *so* rare for me to come across something I can't fix.

Opera had a one-day 'free licence' giveaway to celebrate their
tenth anniversary, but then made Opera v8 free for all. Peter.

Just noticed that thanks.

To anyone following this thread, a total reinstall of a non Beta version
worked fine, so the remaining question is how come the original Beta
installation worked fine until Norton was installed/uninstalled, and yet
the post-Norton reinstall failed.

The word 'BETA' gives the game away.

I *know* that, but it's left me with that puzzling question above, it
worked fine on this guy's computer, he installed Norton, it worked fine
for another year.

He uninstalled Norton, it failed.
I reinstalled the Beta, it didn't work.
I reinstalled the Beta in a different directory, it still didn't work.

I installed a proper copy (though initially it was only SP0) and it works
perfectly.

Weird.
