I just bought a win xp for my network. I am able to share
the files/folders on xp to win98 (everyone on 98 gains
access to XP). I am also able to share between win98 and
win98, but I am not able to access files/folders on Win98
from the win xp.
All of the desktops are in the same Workgroup. All the
desktops can see each other in network neiborhood. The
only thing is XP is unable to gain access to the win98
computers or printers.
Can someone help me?
Thanks in advance.
Rob

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

I have almost the same identical problem using a new XP
Pro laptop with mostly WIN98 machines and one Win2k and a
service running Win2k. All machine use the same logon
password. All machines can get into my XP machine but I
cannot get into their shared files. I can see the
network, I then can see their folders but once I click on
any folder to see their files, my system locks up and I
have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to stop the file from running - even
sometimes have to reboot. The following are running:
Client for MS Networks, File & Printer Sharing for MS
Networks, NW Link Net Bios, NWLink IPX/PX/Net Bios
Compatiable Transport Protocol and Internet Protocal.
Should one or several of the above be removed or
unchecked? BTW, no firewall is running, including MS.
I'll be watching this site for any information.
