XP can see win2k but Win2k can't see XP

I have 2 computers connected by a wired router. One is WinXP
proffessional andthe other is windows 2000.

I have assigned IP addresses to each and can ping each machine with no
problems. In My Network Places, winXP can see Win2k but not itself, and
win2k cannot see winXP, only itself.
I have a printer connected to the winXP machine, and the win2k machine
can see that, as in it can send files for printing.

What can I do or need to do to get each machine to see itself and each
other?
Thanks

You need to specifically share the drives/folders that you want to share.
In Explorer right click on the drive/folder and select sharing (or
properties -> sharing) and set up the appropriate permissions. In some
cases Windows will tell you that sharing is the spawn of the devil and
will lead to the end of the world as you know it, make your own decisions

Ok, I have done that, but there is no change.
Anything else?

To /see/ the machines, he needs to set up sharing?

Not having done what you are doing for a long time, I seem to recall you
need to set up the XP user on the Win2k machine as a user?

Just add the same details to the Win2k machine (username/password) as
are on the XP machine, and try that.

Are you trying to share, or just see the machines?

Hi,

If your 2000 machine is formatted Fat32 and your XP machine is
formatted NTFS then XP can 'see' the Fat323 drives but your win2000
machine (Fat32) can't access NTFS drives.

I think so, otherwise there's nothing to 'see'.
Your point about user names/passwords is valid, I forgot that.

Sharing of specified folders is already setup on both machines.
The win2k machine can see itself but can't see the winXP machine
The WinXP machine can see the win2k machine but cannot see itself!
