The XP box authenticates to the domain, group policies take effect, can ping
the PDC, can browse the entire network and other DC's, "except" the PDC,
which it has for years. Can't use \\PDC\share$ in run cmd. The login acct.
I'm using is in the domain admins group. This is also an intermittent problem
sometimes solved with a reboot.

What tests should I run first? Where would you go from here?

Thanks in advance, WS

Event log errors?
Unedited ipconfig /all from this client, and from the domain controller?
(note that there's no such thing as a PDC or BDC in active directory - just
DCs)

Thanks for your responses.
nslookup on my xp client failed to find the authoritative dns server. I
flushed and reregistered dns, I went to other xp clients and ran netdiag and
all tests passed, netdiag, dcdiag /v, passed on all tests on the dns server.
I did alot of googling and found that the quickest and easiest solution was
to disjoin from the domain and rejoin. I almost did that, but was being
prevented from it because the workgroup checkbox was grayed out. So I ran the
network ID wizard, and since then I can now get to the server shares
normally, even after several reboots. The only failing in netdiag now is
Kerberos, fatal, does not have a ticket. At this point I guess the only thing
left is to disjoin and rejoin the domain, because now the workgroup checkbox
is not grayed out. Thanks again. I will repost if Kerberos passes after that.

That fixed it. Netdiag shows Kerberos passed with no additional comments.
nslookup found the authoritative dns server. I won't say pdc anymore, thanks
for reminding me of that detail. This whole issue was a great learning
experience.
Thanks again to all.
