you only need to use the log onot domain feature if you are doing just that.
you would have a domain server at your location and would definalty know
about it.
Now it is verry likly you don't have a domain controler so i would sugest
you check the windows xp conection properties and under the advanced section
of the ip properties there is a selection to use netbios over tcp/ip. select
that and try it. also you should disable the firewall on the xp machine as
it could be blocking ports 137,138,and 139. make sure print and file sharing
is enabled on the windows 98 box and verify the ip adresses are in the same
class. I.E, 192.168.1.x or somethign like that. the key to note here is that
the last set of numbers are the only ones different then the rest. if they
are then you won't have mich success sharing files without thierd party
materials.
