XP and Win98 network IP address problem

Hi,

I have 1 XP machine, 1 Win98, a switch and a broadband router.

It seems I can configure the network to share files / printers or to access
the internet, but not both things. I think it may have something to do with
the subnet mask.
XP machine has IP 192.168.1.35 assigned by DHCP in router, subnet mask
255.255.255.0
Win 98 machine has IP 192.168.1.36 assigned by DHCP in router, subnet
255.0.0.0 when it can see the internet - but can't share files with XP
machine.
WAN side of router has ISP assigned fixed IP address with a subnet of
255.0.0.0.

If I manually assign a 192.168.1.etc IP to the Win98 machine and give it a
subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 it can't see the internet any more but now can
share files and printers with the XP machine. It seems that the DHCP in the
outer is giving a different subnet mask to the XP machine and the Win 98
machine.

Any ideas how I can sort this one out?

Graham

I suspect its a DNS and Gateway problem.

When you manually asign an IP address the computer will no longer get its
DNS and gateway settings via dhcp from the router so these would have
enter to be entered manually. I would suggest resetting router to default
values and rebooting before rentering your isp details.

Also check the swich isn't acting s DHCP server - DHCP rely is fine . By
any chance were you using ICS before you got the router ? because ICS
also acts as a DHCP server.

Another quick and dirty fix for file sharing would be to load the Netbui
protocol on both PCs and ensure that TCP/IP is no longer bound to Microsoft
Networking. For very small networks because it provides its own Netbios
info Netbui is actually better for file and printer sharing than TCP/IP
but if both protocols are bound to MS Networking file and printer sharing
it can cause conflicts that slow the network down.

Thanks Ronco,

I was using ICS and an ISDN line before I got the router.
How would I find out if my switch is acting as a DHCP server?

I do seem to have achieved the quick and dirty fix by putting netbeui on
both pcs but I can't get either machine to see interetn without TCP/IP

Why did you remove TCP/IP? you cannot use the internet without
TCP/IP, so you should put it back.

NetBEUI (Although I don't see why you couldnt use NetBIOS over IPX/SPX
instead) should only be needed for file & print sharing.

NetBIOS over TCP/IP is perfectly adequate. Adding NetBEUI or IPX/SPX
is treating the symptoms rather than solving the problem.

I haven't used Win98 in a long time, but I seem to remember NetBIOS over
TCP/IP wasn't an option.

I agree it's not the perfect solution, but it's an adequate workaround

it tended to install NetBEUI as standard FWIR.

"Specifically, if the "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" option (which is
the default setting that cannot be changed in Windows 95/98) is
enabled in TCP/IP properties" from microsoft, com implies it was
available, as it was in 3.11, 95 etc

OK, thanks, I hadn't realised this. Having just checked the MS site
myself, it would seem that this is indeed the case.
