I agree that connecting two computers directly to each other requires
a crossover Ethernet cable. A regular Ethernet cable won't work, and
neither computer will see a connection to the other one or show a link
light.
I disagree about adding IPX/SPX. Windows 98/XP can network with each
other using only the default TCP/IP protocol. It's OK to install
IPX/SPX, but it isn't necessary.
If your network uses more than one protocol, choose one of them for
file and printer sharing, and un-bind sharing from the other one(s).
