I've forgotten much of win98 networking steps.. is it necessary to manually
bind tcp/ip to the adapter?

The protocol is automatically bound to the card and the service.

Still no luck. The workgroup called WORKGROUP that has an XPpro pc and a
Win2kServer pc can't see the win98 pc. Also, this win98 1st edition (no
updates until I can access network) pc can't ping the router. It does a
successful ping of the loopback add. so I'm assuming tcp/ip is installed
correctly. All hardware, nic, utp cables are fine. This pc has a second
partition for yet another win2k server os and all hardware functions
perfectly and this os is recognized in the "WORKGROUP".

Are you getting a valid IP address on that 98 PC?
