have a Windows 2000 Server with SP4 running a domain with five workstations
all running Windows XP with SP2. The workstations have no problem logging
onto the domain and accessing the shared drives. All of the workstations use
Microsoft Office 2002 and use Word, Excel and files for their accounting
system on the Server. There is a shared printer on the server that all of
the workstations are connected.

As of monday morning this all worked just fine. After a couple of hours of
work two of the PCs were no longer able to print to the server printer and
had problems with Word, Excel, and the accounting software. They are able to
open the applications, but have problems when they try to access files off
of the server. The other three workstations are not having any problems at
all.

Since this started we have tried rebooting the workstations multiple times
and tried reconnecting the printer. The printer status on the workstations
shows that it is ready. When you try open the properties for the printer it
shows the hourglass and after a few minutes will display a message about not
having the drivers installed and asks to install them. I have tried
installing them and it does no good. After another few minutes the
properties window will finally open. When you try to print a test page is
says there was an error and asks if you want to troubleshoot. I have also
tried to reconnect the printer by browsing the network to the shared printer
and choosing to connect. All it does is shows the window with the searching
icon and does not connect the printer. I have also tried disabling the
Windows XP firewall.

If the user on the workstations with the problem open Word, Excel, and the
accounting program right after they logon in the morning they have no
problem. If they do not open something, on the server, in each application
rightaway they will not be able to access the server unless they logoff and
back on.

You have disabled the firewall feature enabled
by default in XP SP2?

Okay so when the problem occurs you attempt to access
the problem server and what exact error do you receive?

No error messages are displayed, except for the one about the printer
drivers. All it does is shows the hourglass and does not respond. Sometimes
the PCs completely freeze. All of the programs work unless you try to do
something will the printing, such as print preview.

One of the PCs has a local print and we changed that to the default printer
and it did no good. We have removed the server printer from this workstation
and restarted it and it took care of the problem.

For the other PC we have moved the server printer to it and set the printer
up as a local default printer. We are currently trying to remove the server
printer connection from this PC and it does not want to be deleted.

Would this be caused by some printer driver problem on these PCs?
