Xmas shopping - NAS media server solution?

Contenplating a DSM 313 external storage solution with 1/2 Tb drive,
and a cheap media server. Want to be able to play all of my mp3's and
DVD's (or DivX as they may have to be) through tele/amp. But I'm new
to this NAS thing and could do with some guidance.

Is the DSM any good? I want to set it up as a server too which I
understand is possible. Alternative could be an NSLU2 Link Storage
Device, but I'll still have to buy an external drive and caddy. If I
set this up as a NAS, using the DSM 313 would I be able to remotely
access my files store on the drive over the Internet?

Not really sure how this would work as my broadband is on DHCP - so
how would I know what IP to dial into?

Help!?

Obviously not a very popular external NAS device then judging by the
lack of interest!

I use buffalo linkstation and 2 of their media players. Just bought a
750Gb maxtor monster to compliment it up to 1Tb. Works fine.

As for your "broadband being on dhcp", if you mean you have dynamic IP
instead of static, then DynamicDNS is your solution (get a router that
supports it).
