XBOX 360 only works by unplugging and then plugging in ethernet cable from router?

I have 2 desktop computers, 1 laptop computer and 1 Xbox 360 using this
WRT54GS ver 6 router. The desktops and the xbox are wired and the laptop is
wireless. I replaced my old linksys router which I never had a problem with
for this one. If my desktop computer is turned off and I turn on my XBOX,
the router does not recognize the Xbox. I mean the XBOX is plugged into
port 3 and that light does not flash on the router. Now, if I turn on my
computer and then turn on my xbox, it still doesn't work. If I turn on my
computer, turn on my XBOX and then unplug the xbox ethernet cable from the
back of the router and then plug it back in, then the router recognizes it
and it works great. I have had 2 chat sessions and I phone session with
linksys and they cannot figure it out. They had me go into my xbox and set
a static IP address, gateway and DNS. Then she had me go into forward a few
ports on the router. I never had to do any of this stuff with the old
router by the way. The last guy I talked to on the phone said I need to
figure out a way to turn off "MAC Address cloning" in the xbox. I checked
and there is no way to do this, so I think he is wrong about this. Does
anyone have ANY ideas as to why this problem is happening?

I believe you have a Bad Ethernet switch portion of the Wired/Wireless Router.

If the PC and the XBox are both connected to ports of the E-switch part of the Router you
should be able to ping the XBox (which you said was statically set). If the Ethernet lights
of the ports don't turn on when thee XBox is ON and connected, there is a problem with the
cip-set that does the E-Switching.

I decided to remove the cable from port 3 and try port 4. Guess what? It
worked. So I guess there is something wrong with port 3 on my router (which
is brand new).

If it is brand-new, get a replacement under warranty ASAP !

I if bring it back and get the same router, can I just swap it out with the
old one and it will work? Or do I have to go thru the router setup process
and stuff again.
Does the different MAC address on the router matter at all?

What you can do in an exchange would be up to the vendor you bought the unit form and the
MAC address is a moot point. It is like a telephone. You can use *any* telephone number in
conjunction with a telephone.

Ports are NOT set as a DMZ, the IP address is set to be the DMZ.

guess I may have misspoke... ment to say some routers have one rj45 jack as
in the DMZ like my linksys BEFSR41 the fourth jack in my sx41 you can set a
mac or an ip addy. Just a thought why one jack would work and the other
wouldn't.
