The only good thing about being locked down to 24kb on a rural dial up
line, is that you can actually see things happening that would never be
noticed on broadband.

In the last couple of days my connection has been even slower than usual,
giving a new meaning to the term "Web Crawling".

Anyway, I notice that on some websites I get a message (for sometimes 20 or
30 seconds) of "waiting for static.scribd.com" in the status bar. A search
on that string brought up a lengthy article in Wikipedia that makes
absolutely no sense to me.

Googling also seems to indicate that it is a function of Flash or has
something to do with Flash. I am using Debian, without flash, NoScript
is installed and all scripts are turned off, as is javascript and java.

Anybody got an idea of what is trying to get loaded on my end, and what to
turn off so as to get my high speed link back?

Thanks
Araminska

not sure what that site is or what it's loading for...

I use firefox and ad block plus. If you load up a web page, you
can click on the adblock icon on firefox and select / add sites to
block. On a page that accesses http://static.scribd.com/ you can just
add http://*scribd.com/* to the block list and it won't be loaded by
firefox. I speed up a lot of page loads that way... there is a ton of
crap that is loaded when ever you go to many sites. using adblock to
block these sites from loading speeds things up a lot.

That's the actual content of the web page you are going to. Turning it
off wouldn't do you any good.
