ws2003 file sharing?

I just installed ws2003 on a machine that was running w2k pro
workstation. With w2k workstation this machine was file sharing
perfectly with w2k server. ws2003 however refuses to file share with the
w2k server machine. (These are the only 2 machines on the network.) I've
been through every file sharing thread in this newsgroup for the last
year and I can't find any help that works.

Does ANYONE have peer to peer windows file and printer sharing working
between ws2003 and w2k server on the same segment? If so, how do you set
the damm thing up?

About the only thing I've been able to determine is that the browser
service on each machine fails to see the other machine. browstat is of
no use to me so far, all I seem to get out of it is that the other
machine isn't there. Pings work fine back and forth. Netbios over tcp/ip
is on.

Do you get any error messages?
What happens if you try \\<ip-address> instead of \\computername?

I had to think about the context for this experiment for a minute. So I
tried the "Add Network Place" wizard and used the ip address for the
other machine instead of the computer name. This works, thanks, I am now
up and running. Works on both machines. I used for example
\\192.168.1.130 and things started to happen. What I'd like to know is
why am I not presented with a friendly list of computer names in the
workgroup like before with the w2k/w2ks setup?

You probably have two boxes that both believe they are the master bruwser.
Stop and disable the Computer Browser service on one of the servers.

I saw this response in earlier newsgroup threads and tried it a couple
times. In case you are working from a tech support script they give you,
this doesn't seem to work. I don't know if it never works, but not for
me so far.

Hm...Did you reboot both machines after disabling the service?

Do you have a firewall like Sygate that may block appearing in Network
Neighborhood (aka My Network Places)?
Does it work from the 2000 machine at least?
You're in a workgroup, correct (just making sure)?
Not sure if this will do anything at all, but in the Properties for your
NIC, click File and Print Sharing for MS Networks and then the Properties
for that and select "Make browser broadcasts..." and reboot both machine

The firewall is off.
I've been doing some tests with browstat and network monitor. The w2ks
machine is quite chatty with the browser service frames, I'm seeing
elections, announcements, list requests, etc. The ws2003 system is
receiving these frames but itself is silent, it sends out no browser
protocol frames. It only shows itself in the workgroup. And this is
regardless if the the broswer service is disabled or enabled on the w2ks
box, which leads me to think its not a master browser conflict problem.
So this is something to understand, why is the ws2003 machine silent?
The browser service is on, but no frames are sent out on the network.
There are only about a billion mmc and other settings to track down,
maybe it doesn't work at all?

Ok, its working now. I don't know exactly what I did which is pretty
typical for me. The thing I mentioned about ws2003 not sending browser
frames out cannot be not correct. Things I did:
1. disabled computer browser service in w2ks.
2. changed ws2003 browser service parameter IsDomainMaster to TRUE in
registry.
3. took out an old NetBT setting for scopeID in the w2ks registry, I was
fixing a networking bug a few years ago and needed this for something I
have now forgotten. This can't be relevant but I thought I would mention
it. I am a beginner so this is all guesswork.
4. rebooted the w2ks machine.
5. ran browstat status on the ws2003 machine and now there were 2
servers in the domain, I knew it was working. Names are now in explorer
where they should be.
Thanks.
