Wild guess: 3 minutes is just about a DNS (nameserver) timeout. Is the
correct IP address set for
the primary DNS?

Every time I turn on my computer, my internet connection lasts about 3 to 3
1/2 minutes. Then I have to disable and enable the connection and then it
works fine after that. I'm using a WRT54GS router with a 7000 Pavilion
computer using Broadcom wireless.

Any idea on what happens at the 3-minute mark after bootup to cause this?

I see the same problem with my XP Pro system at home, talking through
an Actiontec GT701, except that I don't expect it to work at all and
am surprised to see it operate for those first few minutes.

When I apply power to my GT701, it takes a LONG time for it to get
itself initialized. If I turn my PC on too soon (at exactly the
same time, for example), Windows will be up and running before the
network is active. When I then log on to Windows for the first time,
I will ->sometimes be able to use the network for a few minutes, but
then it will die as you describe and I have to disable and re-enable
the network connection.

If I let the GT701 get a little farther along before powering up the
PC, then the line will be initialized before Windows is fully up, and
then the network connection will work correctly without any fiddling
around.

I've taken to letting the GT701 get completely initialized (all
lights green) before powering up my PC; it only take an extra minute
or so. If I wasn't afraid of lightning damage, I'd probably leave the
GT701 plugged in and turned on all the time and eliminate the problem
altogether.

The Microsoft wireless update rollup whatever includes a fix for
Windoze XP for long connect times:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=826942
If you're not using 802.1x authentication, turn it off as that's
probably causing the delay.

I checked everything dealing with the WRT54GS router, Windows XP
Professional, and the Broadcom wireless card, and no time limit of any
parameter I could find is anywhere near 3 minutes (180 seconds).

uncheck the Enable 801.1x box.

And if that does not fix it (especially, if you are using WPA-PSK), you may
have to add a key to the registry (or wait until XP SP2).

To know whether or not you need to add the key, logoff and then logon again
immediately after the initial logon. If you are not connected after the
second logon, you are suffering from the problem (it has to do with
authenticating as a user instead of as a computer).

That statement is correct, the timer lives at the DNS server side. You can
find
it by interrogating the SOA record of that DNS server.
BTW I checked my own server and the value is 300 seconds, not 3 minutes
so I was barking up the wrong tree anyway.
