I see the same problem with my XP Pro system at home, talking through
an Actiontec GT701, except that I don't expect it to work at all and
am surprised to see it operate for those first few minutes.
When I apply power to my GT701, it takes a LONG time for it to get
itself initialized. If I turn my PC on too soon (at exactly the
same time, for example), Windows will be up and running before the
network is active. When I then log on to Windows for the first time,
I will ->sometimes be able to use the network for a few minutes, but
then it will die as you describe and I have to disable and re-enable
the network connection.
If I let the GT701 get a little farther along before powering up the
PC, then the line will be initialized before Windows is fully up, and
then the network connection will work correctly without any fiddling
around.
I've taken to letting the GT701 get completely initialized (all
lights green) before powering up my PC; it only take an extra minute
or so. If I wasn't afraid of lightning damage, I'd probably leave the
GT701 plugged in and turned on all the time and eliminate the problem
altogether.
